Top Fabric is Morris Manor Sky By William Morris
There’s a wall in our bathroom that was asking for something to be put up. After scanning my usual go-to for framed art prints, I was in the mood to try something different.
Since I like to sew, I had some extra fabric laying around the house. And that’s when it occurred to me: what would fabric look like in a frame instead of a print?!
Well, I’m happy to report that it turns out framed fabric looks amazing in a frame! And now I’m totally obsessed.
I’m telling you, this is the perfect DIY because it’s oh-so-quick to do, it doesn’t cost a lot, literally anyone can do it, and it looks surprisingly chic.
Read below for a how-to guide!
Why framed fabric?
- I know I’ve already said this, but you don’t need to be artistic whatsoever.
- The only tools you really need (aside from your fabric and frame/s) are scissors and tape.
- It’s very budget-friendly! (Once I got my two frames from IKEA, I can get the fabric for them for under $20!)
- Opting for framing fabric is so versatile! You can change out fabric with the seasons and holidays or simply when you feel like it.
- Start-to-finish you can have new DIY framed art done in less than 30 minutes.

What you’ll need for your easy DIY framed art
- Picture frame or frames
- Fabric to fit the frame plus an additional 1-2 inches for securing fabric on the matting (you can totally use a frame with no matting too!)
- Scissors
- Tape
- Optional: measuring tape (you can absolutely eyeball this too!)

How to actually make your easy DIY framed art: A step-by-Step guide
- Pick out a frame or frames you plan on using (these can be a repurposed or new)
- Select your fabric (I absolutely love the fabric from this quilt shop, especially anything by William Morris!)
- Cut and position your fabric. I like to cut my fabric so it’s overlaps the matting by 1-2 inches.
- Place in frame and tape down (taping is optional if you have a steady hand!).
- Hang and marvel at your beautiful new DIY framed art!

Style tips and ideas for framing fabric
- Find fabric that complements your style, or just makes you happy!
- Create a gallery wall that has a combination of framed fabric, photos, and prints.
- Swap out framed fabric with the seasons or holidays.
- Use in a nursery/kid’s room and you can switch out the fabrics as they get older.
- Instead of using fabric, you can always frame other textiles like tea towels or bandanas.
- Opt for leaning your framed fabric against a wall (from a dresser) instead of hanging.
Cost and time breakdown
- Frames: free if you already have them or it depends on the frame you purchase, but this can be very budget-friendly if you want it to be! These look high-end and cost $10 a piece!
- Fabric: again, depends on how many frames or the size, but less than $10 per frame (unless your buying online, then sometimes you have to buy at least 1 yard. If you can go into a fabric store, you will probably save money).
- Scissors – $12
- Optional: measuring tape
Perfect idea for a DIY craft night!
I also think this would be so fun to do with a group of friends for a craft night! It may be easier to do around the holidays and pick out some holiday-themed fabric, then you won’t need to worry about matching it to each person’s style. Also, opting for smaller frames may be the way to go so you can be sure people have the space to hang their DIY artwork.
