Creating tradition with the best toddler books
One wonderful tradition to do with your family is reading some of the same books each year at Christmastime.
In fact, switching out books with the seasons makes for sweet traditions throughout the year! This is also a great way to teach your kids about so many things as they are happening.
My parents saved some of the books we read for Christmas as a family when I was growing up. Recently they gave the Christmas books we used so I can pass down the tradition with my daughter, Cora. How sweet is that?
I had totally forgotten about these books, but the moment I opened them up to read to my daughter, I was flooded with memories from my childhood Christmases. Here’s a picture of one of them.
Reading books as a family during the holiday season
Like summers and slow weekends, the holiday season is a wonderful time to cozy up and enjoy books together as a family. You can always start bed time a little earlier or make cups of hot chocolate and snuggle up on the couch as you enjoy each of these stories as a family.
Books particularly lend themselves to a really sweet Christmas eve tradition of reading books like The Night Before Christmas around the Christmas tree or as you tuck everyone into bed.
11 of the best Christmas books to read with your toddler
When your children look back, they’ll remember the books your read with them at Christmastime and cherish the memories you create. Some of these books are classics and some are interactive. But they all are perfect for toddlers!
Here’s the list!
Of course any book list wouldn’t be complete without a Sandra Boynton book. Mo, Ba, Fa La La La La! is such a fun book to read. The cast from the bestselling Moo, Baa, La La La! has returned with a silly holiday twist! ‘Tis the season to be jolly, so sing along with caroling sheep, giggling pigs, and dancing cows as they celebrate Christmas with this merry tune.
Quite possible the most classic Christmas book of all! I can’t remember a Christmas eve where we didn’t read it. I’ve been reading it to my daughter each night since the start of December.
The Night Before Christmas Sound Book
The magic of Clement Clarke Moore’s treasured poem “The Night Before Christmas” comes to life with modern illustrations and prompts to press the 10 holiday sounds as you read along. With thick board book pages and shaped tabs, this Christmas classic will delight your toddler!
You’re My Little Christmas Cookie You’re My Little Christmas Wish
Any book from the Nicole Edwards and Natalie Marshall series is a hit with my daughter (and me to be honest). By now we have most, if not all of her books, and I like to switch them out with the seasons. Whether it’s snuggly snowmen, sweet gingerbread cookies, or sparkling snowflakes, everyone will appreciate the endearing sentiments in these books with a festive twist!
This story beautifully depicts a child’s wonder at a new world, and the hope of capturing and keeping that wonder forever. The quiet fun and sweetness of Peter’s (the main character) small adventures in the deep, deep snow is perfect for reading together on a cozy winter day.
Babies Love Christmas and Santa’s Workshop Lift-A-Flap Books
These two Christmas books are perfect for toddlers! From colors and animals to first words and holidays, the Babies Love Chunky Lift-a-Flap series is a great introduction to reading with cheerful, contemporary, and whimsical illustrations and sturdy, easy-to-lift flap.
With short and simple rhyming text, in Llama Llama Jingle Bells, little llama and his friends give gifts, sing songs, and decorate cookies. It’s a very merry holiday indeed!
Find Spot on Christmas (A Lift-The-Flap Book)
Another lift-the-flap book that you’ll toddler will have so much fun reading! These books may have taught my daughter how to say, “No”, but they are 100% worth it! In Find Spot at Christmas, Spot and his family are getting ready to celebrate Christmas when suddenly, Spot disappears! Where could he have gone? Part of Eric Hill’s Find Spot Series.
Okay, not technically a Christmas book, but I think it feels like it could take place around Christmastime. This is another book on the list that I read when I was a child. Corduroy is a timeless class about a little bear, a little girl, and the friendship they find in each other.
