“Mrs. Katrena, how many throw pillows are on your bed? We’re taking bets…”
This is what a group of students asked me the other day. This may seem like a question out of left field (welcome to being a teacher), but my guess was my students were talking about me/my personality for some reason and they made the connection with my personality and having lots of pillows on my bed.
And here’s the thing: I do love throw pillows. I love to look at them online and in stores. I love to sew pillow covers. And I also love to plop on the couch against some cozy throw pillows with a warm cup of tea and write a blog post (as I’m doing right now).

I find myself regularly being drawn to pretty textiles. A daydream of mine is to run a bed and breakfast after designing/decorating the entire thing. Some nights, when I need to quiet my mind, I will imagine how I would decorate this bed and breakfast. I picture each room having its’ own unique design that’s centered around a cozy throw pillow and a plush, pretty rug.
So, how many pillows are on my bed?
When my students asked me this, I knew they were pinning me as someone who has tons and tons of pillows.
The conversation instantly reminded me of a scene from a Steve Carell movie (I can’t remember which one. It might be the 40 Year Old Virgin? Trust me, I tried searching for it!). In it, this woman he is with has some ridiculous number of throw pillows on her bed. Each night she takes them off, one by one, and each morning puts them back on. Then one night, as they’re climbing into bed, Steve Carell loses his mind because he cannot comprehend why someone would need so many pillows.
“Let me guess. You guys think I have a lot of pillows, don’t you?” They all threw each other under the bus, blaming each other for having the thought. I don’t know about you, but my students always throw each other under the bus without a second thought.
The answer is four. I currently have four pillows on my bed.
Two are them are these game-changers. Yes, they are worth the price.

Switching out throw pillows to freshen up a space
I want my house to feel like a home. One way I try to do this is to rotate my home decor with the seasons and holidays. I reuse a lot of it year after year BUT, this can still get expensive. One solution I’ve become a fan of is switching out/changing up the combinations of my throw pillows around my home.Â
Another reason why I like to change out my throw pillows is because once I buy them I have them for years. I don’t buy new throw pillows each season…unless there’s a new one that I love.
With that said, you can do a ton of different combinations and this regularly breathes new life into a space in your home.Â

My go-to places to buy good quality and affordable throw pillows
I enjoy sewing my own pillow covers when I find a fabric I love from the most magical fabric and quilt store (and where you can buy fabric online!). These are my absolute favorite pillow inserts to use when I’m making my covers.
But my sewing abilities have their limitations, so when I am going to buy one it’s pretty much always from Target.Â
Jean Stoffer is, in my opinion, is the queen of designing beautiful textiles. I have yet to buy one because they are out of price range, but a girl can window shop and dream. So, my other go-to places for throw pillows are
The reason why Target is my go-to place is because the fabric is always good quality (soft and cozy), and the pillow insert actually fills the cover. You know when you sit down in a chair or couch and the throw pillow is scratchy, snags, and the insert is too small and lumpy? You have extra fabric and you don’t know if you’re leaning against a rolled up sweatshirt or what is going on exactly. Yeah, no one wants that. So Target it is.Â
Creating traditions
My mom does a really good job of switching out some of her home decor pieces with the seasons and holidays. It’s nothing over the top, but it’s enough to notice and to feel intentional. Now that she’s been doing this for years, it’s exciting and special to see the items she brings out year after year.Â

While this roundup is pretty heavy on the red and green department, I do think there’s enough versatility for them to be used throughout the year. For instance, see below for a combo would work for the Spring!

Now that I have a daughter of my own, something I want to do is create traditions that my daughter, Cora, will get to experience with our family. One tradition I want to pass on to her is having special items in our home to help create the magic of the Christmas (and other holiday/times of the year) spirit. Just like me, I hope that as she grows up, she will eventually get excited, nostalgic, or just plain happy as we snuggle up on the couch with some hot chocolate and our cozy throw pillows.Â
